GP gadget...digital photo frames

If you haven't got seriously into Christmas shopping yet, you may not have noticed this year's must-have gadget but, trust us, the digital photo frame is a fantastic invention.

Model NuVue NV-561 digital photo frame

Price £99.95

With many of us now using digital cameras, the majority of our photos are stored in the camera or computer, never to be displayed again. And what is the use in that?

Well fear not, the digital photo frame has come to the rescue. With one of these nifty gadgets, hundreds of your digital images can be displayed in great quality through a single picture frame.  And you don't even need a computer to set it up.

Just insert your camera's memory card into the built-in slot, and the images are automatically resized to fit the frame. The frame then plays a ‘slide show' of every image on the card. Press a couple of buttons to customise, for example, the different time intervals between images. The number of images is only limited by the capacity of the memory card being used.

We've tried the NuVue NV-561, which is simple to use and would be ideal for a technology-shy relative with a digital camera but no computer.

There is a huge range of digital frames available and prices vary greatly depending on the size and functions.

Some can play music while you view the slide show, and allow you to display movies from your memory card. Others can be wall-mounted and come with a remote control. The screens available measure anything between five and a whopping 19 inches.

Most frames require a mains plug, but some can run off rechargeable batteries.

A digital frame is the essential companion to your digital camera and a great way of showing off your pictures.
