Computer theft

Q: We have just suffered the theft of two laptops from the practice during surgery hours. We have CCTV footage of the thief but my insurer will not pay out. Why is this?

A: Whether such incidents of theft are covered under your policy will depend on the wording.

I would always recommend that a surgery purchases a policy that includes what is known as full theft cover. This means that the sort of loss you have suffered would be covered.

Unfortunately, many of the surgery insurance policies restrict theft cover to when there is evidence of violent and visible entrance to, or exit from, the premises.

This means the insurance will not provide cover against a thief walking in and stealing items during surgery opening hours.

While price is important, you need to be aware of what you are buying as not all surgery insurance packages offer the same levels of cover. So make sure you know what is and is not covered.
