Additional pension

Q: I am taking early retirement this year from general practice at the age of 55. Does the option of increasing my yearly pension by up to £5,000 per year by lump sum payment have to be paid for before my retirement date? Or is there an option to increase my pension in this way after I have retired and my pension payments are in place?
