HMRC, 'sweetheart deals' and GP car insurance

The Guardian reported a leaked document this week which disclosed that HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) was paid £4.5bn from four 'sweetheart deals'.

These are arrangements that HMRC comes to with taxpayers. Now that sounds like a lot of money to you and me, but as Margaret Hodge, chairwoman of the Public Accounts Committee asked: ‘How much did they not get?’

This all feels a long way away from the experiences GPs have with HMRC. At a meeting at these offices just a few weeks ago, we went through the same tedious questions, how much business use of the car has been claimed, how much is the home used for professional work etc etc.

The latest shout for HMRC is to disallow all the car insurance costs if the car insurance schedule does not specify business use – so check those schedules!
