Medical records copying

Can you offer us any guidance on charging a fee to third parties such as patients' solicitors for copies of medical records, especially for large-volume medical records?

The law relating to access to medical records is now contained within the Data Protection Act 1998, specifically section 7.

The notes have to be provided within 40 days of a written request and the fee charged must not exceed the legal maximum.

You can wait until you receive payment before releasing the records, but the maximum fee you can charge is only £50, even if you have to copy a large amount of medical records.
