Locum insurance

My partners and I are facing a tough year financially, so we are considering ways of cutting expenditure. One partner suggests that each of us could cancel our locum insurance cover and, if one of us falls sick, the partnership can pick up the tab for hiring a locum until the GP concerned returns to work. We would put money aside in case this happens. Is funding a locum ourselves really a good idea?
